I agree with those who say it's a matter of etiquette,or chivalry, or just a basic biological necessity. They are of course all right, men have historically been the protectors of women an children, it's why nature made us bigger and stronger, otherwise there would be no necessity for us to be the way we are. Just because the enemy is in this case the water,a force we can't defeat, does not mean that basic natural drive to protect the weaker members of our society ends,it is just as imperative as always. And if the way to protect you is to potentially give up our lives the vast majority of men will do that,it's why the species has lasted as long as it has,any species that loses that instinct will eventually die out. Which of course brings us to the human species,we are through many factors losing that drive, all you have to see is wars where women and children are intentionally targeted to see that. I cant help but wonder where that's going to lead us,it is too much to go into here though, maybe later.

Old fashioned sexism. But I suppose I shouldn't complain if it gets me off a sinking ship quicker....Probably also because the children are needed to repopulate, and the women are needed to look after them, or something like that...

This rule was established back in the day, long before women's rights came about. Women and Children were considered the weaker of the species, therefor if there were not enough lifeboats it basically ensured that they survived. Think about how tragic it is to hear about women and kids dying in MVA's.

this dates back a very long time, but men were more capable swimmers and therefore more likely to survive than the women and children by swimming to safety, even if it is a thousand miles away, what are they hercules?

Because it is the gentlemanly thing to do. I think they call it chivalry or chauvanism. But anyway that's the way it should be.
