You can buy all kinds of commercial cleaners at shoe stores. So get one to match the material of your shoes and follow directions. Also good soft tooth brushes help down around the soles. If they are leather, you can even use shoe polish on them after cleaning. Or just throw them in the washing machine. Big thing is to know the material they are made of and care for it as you would anything else you have of the same material.

If when you first buy the tennis shoes, I try to use the commerical tennis shoe cleaners ect.. But eventually I clean tennis shoes, marching band shoes too in my washer.
I try to start by wiping off the excess dirt, rocks, pebbles etc... Next I spray with Shout (pretreater laundry aid), & either use a sweater laundry bag or pillow cases for each shoe. I tend to wash them with towels or sheets to protect them from the agitator. But I do it on heavy duty cycle with laundry detergent and Clorox 2 . If the insoles are removable I take them out and scrub, shout and wash in the washer too. I immediately remove them, and put the insoles standing up inside the shoe. I make sure the tongue is open wide for air to circulate and leave the shoes on top of my dryer. In couple of days, they dry naturally from the heat of the dryer.
I would never use newspaper inside a shoe... the ink might stain the inside. Most shoes if protected when wash, don't need anything to shape them.

you can use warm water and soap however depending on how soiled the shoes are I wouldn't recommend going cheap like that. Also depending on what type of soil or dirt you have on the shoe is a factor because leather will sort of rot if you do wash the shoe. Just go out and buy some shoe cleaner; will save you a bunch of headaches in the long run.

i use a product called 'clean and simple'. if you look it up on the internet you will probably find it. It is wonderful, biodegradable, and environmentally safe. Actually, it is an all-purpose cleaner for just about anything. So you can use one product instead of buying many different ones. It is cost effective as well.

I run mine through the washing machine, and then air dry in front of the refrigerator (at the bottom where air blows out). For the stubborn stains, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

I throw them in the washer, yes, even the leather ones and they come out great. Don't put them in the dryer, though. Let them air dry for a day or so.

spray with Shout or other prewash
wash in detergent and Clorox II with some towels
do not put in dryer
put at front base of refrigerator where the vent is...just lay them on their sides with the opening to the vent...that dries them overnight or less

Clean the cloth part with vineagar (toothbrush)and leather with vaseline via wiping it over

I just run mine thru the washer. Does an OK job. Normally I just open them up wide and let them air dry.
