Different chemicals are used depending upon the type of film to be developed.

The first step is the reduction of the silver halide salt crystals that have been exposed to light to silver metal. This step is called development and is typically done with a mixture of metol and hydroquinone in a basic aqueous solution. Often phenidone and ascorbic acid are used instead.

The film is prevented from overdeveloping by placing it in a water bath or acidic "stop bath." Dilute acetic acid is often used.

The final solution, called the hypo or fixer, removes the unreduced silver halide salts from the film. Sodium thiosulphate is often used for this.
