Slither was James Gunn's directorial debut; a comedy horror film loosely inspired by classic alien invasion films such as The Blob ,and Night of the Creeps (which may have been a reason). Slither was a box office bomb, earning a disappointing $3,880,270 in its opening weekend, and grossing a worldwide box office total of $12.2 million, substantially less than its total budget of $29.5 million (when marketing costs are included). However, Slither received generally favorable reviews, with an 84% favorable rating among the consensus of critics tracked by Rottentomatoes.com, and was "one of the best reviewed horror films in years" according to some members of the press.

The story and graphics were said to be similar to older horror movies which may have been a reason.

This is one of the few movies that we paid full price to see (we usually go to matinees or discount "$1" movies") and found that it was well worth the price it was surprising that it did not do better at the box office.

I think the main reasons that it may not have done well were:

- Fierce competition with other movies that came out at the same time that. I can't specifically remember which movies they were, I recall that we debated between this movie and four others that we really wanted to see, but this one was the only one that we all wanted to see.

- From the trailer that was shown on TV, targeted more of a younger horror/gore/gross out film seeking audience and failed to include enough snippets of the dark humor this movie had that older adults, especially women, would enjoy if they had seen it.

- No big-name star in it, likely due to budget reasons. While it had talented actors that had been in other films. To stay within budget and have a recognizable name to draw viewers it would have been a great idea to hire an former big name actor (or two) that has fallen out of the limelight and would work for a lower fee. Using an actor or two likeErik Estrada as one of the cops, Eric Roberts as the husband or Joey-Lauren Adams as Starla would have been great asset to draw people to this movie.
