If 186 is 100% how much would 12 be?
Cross multiply like this:
186 100%
\/
/\
12 A

Where A is equal to 12x100 divided by 186 = result%

Forget the % key. You don't need it.

Devide the 12 by 186 and multiply the result by 100 and call it a percentage.

I note that another answer is 186 / 100 = 1.86 = 1%

1.86 x 12 = 22.*** (can't remember the exact figure and don't have a calculator close). This is 12% of 186 and not the percentage of 186 that is 12.

In your example, divide the smaller number by the larger number and multiply by 100:

(12/186)x100 = 6.45 %

But you can also ask the question "what percent is 186 of 12?"

(186/12)x100 = 1550%

In general, if you want to know what % x is of y, it's just 100(x/y)

Percent (%) means per one hundred (a century is 100 years and a cent is a 100th of a dollar, right?).

If there are 100 people in a room and 25 are wearing red shirts then 25 per 100 or 25% are wearing red shirts. That is a ratio that may be constant (25% of 200 people would be 50 people with red shirts).

To solve your problem, first find the ratio of your items 12/186 = 0.0645... then find out how many that would be per 100.

0.0645 x 100 = 6.45 or 6.45% or (6.45 per hundred).

Notice that 6.45% is merely easier to work with (especially in comparisons with other data) than 12/186ths which is hard to visualize but equally correct.

Another way of asking that question is: 12 is (=) what percent of (x) 186

12=what % x 186

12/186=what %

.0645=what %

6.45%
