My Sony Vaio desktop computer is just over a year old.
The other day i switched it on as normal and find that it won't connect to the net, won't connect to the printer and the DVD rewriter wont work.
I can still load games and programmes from disc etc.
I have re-mastered the comp, but it's still the same.
Do i have to call in a repair man/woman, or can any of you help?
Please note: I am not computer literate, so please make your answers easy for me to understand.
Many, many thanks to you all.

Okay, you'll have to keep me updated on this one. First, are you using your DVD rewriter to load the games and programs from CD? Second, on the back of your computer, where you plug in the internet cable, is it lit up?

Also, this is going to require a lot of back and forth conversation. You may wish to include your Yahoo messenger handle or something if you want me to walk you through.

Have you run regular anit virus sweeps on it? It is always wise to scan a disc for virus before loading it. It sounds like your settings may have been adjusted or your drivers may be corrupted. I would scan for maliware, viruses, spyware, etc. Or if you have system restore points try going back to a date when it was working fine. To do this:
Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on System Restore
and pick a date you know it was working properly. I would then run anti virus and other anti spyware malliware to check.

It really depends on the problem but there are several options avaiable to you. If you can connect to the net try using Microsoft online Windows Live One Care one of the services they provide is "Back up and Restore" and its free. Hope that helps

Those are three completely different problems, and one wouldn't affect the others. It's really hard to help someone without being there to test & re-rest, so if I were you, I'd definitely call in a repairman.

If it's still under warranty, make a call to whoever you're supposed to; if not, make sure the repair company is either based in an electronics store, or make sure the company is "A+" Certified (if you're in the U.S.; regardless of your location, look for a place that's been in business a while.)

Hi First of all run virus and spyware checkers and remove any thing they find if you staill have a problem try this

Do you run XP as an Operating System if so try to restore it to an earlier date, one that you know it was working ok.
Click start, control panel and network connections see if your network is displayed in there ok.
go to start, control, system hardware and device manager check you network card see if everything is working ok or if you need to install a driver

If that fails try clicking on start, control panel, add and remove programs, add and remove windows components put your windows dvd in the drive and try adding the missing components

hi julie b- try ...hilst the computer is starting, stick in the windows boot up cd and press enter and follow instructions... then press "R" and the computer will repair any problems relating to the software part of the computer.... if that doesnt work by process of elimination we've determined whether the problem is hard ware or software related... if its hardware related try to see if it's the mother board that causing the problem or if its the connecting ide capables....
thanks Mike

they are strange symptoms and really point towards more than one problem, so it would seem.
Does the computer rercognize the printer, network card and DVD rewriter or are they just not working? (check device manager but don't change anything)

If your computer hangs or reboots while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
