the real answer is: when apple introduced the imac computer, it stood for internet because it was the first computer that allowed the user to get on to the internet within fifteen minutes of opening the box. it became apple's consumer brand signifyer, that is still used today on consumer lines except the recent macbook.

the i for internet is the closest one i have heard yet.

Yes, when Apple first released the iMac, the i Stood for internet. as time went on, Apple released other products (iPod iTunes iPhoto iSync) with an i in front of them. at that point the i was designed to designate consumer products. (example: the iMac and the iBook were apples consumer line of computers up untill early 2006). then a few years back, Apple had a concept of having all their consumer products integrate seamlessly and the called this iLife (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and more recently iWeb and Garageband) and all the iLife programs would work together so that you could put your iPhoto pictures on your iPod through iTunes. and now you can even put finished iMovies on your 5th gen iPod.

but anyways, the meaning of the "i" has evolved over time from internet to consumer designation to interoperability (but thats me saying that, not Apple)

P.S. don't get me started on the e in eMac

The 'i' simply stands for 'interim'. Anything at Apple with an 'i' has not yet completed its strategic potential (iMac, iTV, iPod - a likely convergence from interim products to a fully fledged home entertainment system?)

Interactive, I believe. They are all interactive tools of media where an individual can control what it contains, when, how, etc..
Better ask Apple to be sure.

Same thing as "e". All the "e"-this-and-that? THey wanted to be different. They should have been really different and use "fn"
