i once had a debate on this. my argument was that if you use non-numeral values and use abstract ones such as "good in writing" or "extroverted", there's no one to say which is better than the other. so inaccurate as it is, numerical values are what we use now because it promotes competition and there is something concrete we can see on our report cards. even in colleges with no number grading systems such as MIS (i think) still have hidden grades, which are numbers

Yes but only if they are awarded externally, by examiners not connected to the pupils. the problem with internally assessed grades is that the pupils popularity, personality and the teachers preference can push out real ability and unfairly reward people the teacher likes better.

Yes. Because out in the real world, you are expected to produce in your work enviroment.
You don't produce to a satisfactory level, you are fired.
This crap about "Oh it will hurt the kiddies feelings" is just bunk- and I am NOT willing to take the time to give one hoot in hell about their feelings. They don't like it? Fine, produce or starve.
If you perform in a superior way, I'll promote you, give you bigger paychecks, more time off,,,but I'm not going to stroke your ego until you can prove you're worth it. Show me you're worth it, show me that you can earn it, show me you can do it,,,,and I'll make damn sure you're rewarded well for your efforts.
This is why I tell guys not to get married until they're 30 cause women are dream killers. Women suck down a mans desire to get ahead in life, suck down his life blood, his desire to exceed and excel in life. ONCE he's gotten to his level that he wants to be at? THEN he can get married, have a steady relationship.
Same goes for women- look at Peoples Magazine's top 50 female executives. Each one is ugly, but extreemly compentent and has worked darn hard to get to THE top.
They couldn't make it on looks, they made it on skills they worked at.

well they must draw a line for those who pass or fail, set some limits. of course any schoolwork should be accompanied with the right feedback too, otherwise it is all useless.
