Neither of these sentences is correct as there is no article (a or the) before the word letter, you have also not used an upper case letter for "I" If there were an article the first sentence it would still be wrong as it mixes tenses. The second would be correct if it were to read "I received a/the letter yesterday".

The first one should be "I had received the letter yesterday." (past tense of have) and then it would be as gramatically correct as "I received the letter yesterday."
Capitalization is as important as correct grammar, by the way.
