Captain Jack.
(OK, so he's bi, who's counting?)
(From 'Torchwood', and 'Doctor Who', - I suddenly realised there's also Captain Jack Sparrow, and I would NEVER suggest that he might not be completely straight!)
Edit:
To Just_ine_credible: I meant the character 'Captain Jack' rather than the actor John Barrowman, who I believe is gay rather than bi. The character was very cool in Doctor Who for stating that in 'the future' that he comes from, everyone is pretty much bi and there are no labels given for sexual orientation, as that is considered outdated.
Re-edit:
Actually, maybe my hero would be Russell T. Davies, who of course wrote the character, as well as the excellent 'Queer As Folk'. He doesn't push issues in a confrontational way, he just creates believable characters who are gay or bi and also very cool.

The problem with the gay rights movement is that we don't have a national hero. All the other civil rights movements had very prominent, galvanizing, prolific speakers who would march on the streets and bring faces to the public so that they might see who they discriminate against. The closest thing we have to that nowadays is the HRC.
My gay hero would be the ACLU. They put action behind words.

Batbaby mentioned "Captain Jack" whos REAL Name is "John Barrowman."
But honestly I've never seen him stand up for gay rights or anything similar here in the states.
Sure, he was born in England and spent most of his young childhood in Scotland, but his spent his teen years and young adulthood in a suburb of Chicago: Joliet, IL.
He went to High School and College in the Chicago area.
But he never "made" it big here in the states.
He only found fame in the UK through stage and the small screen.
Here in the states, he's never spoken publicly about being bisexual nor taken up the fight for gay rights.
The problem with the question of a "Gay Hero" is there sadly are NO heros anymore.
From Melissa Etheridge to Lance Bass and most recently, T.R. Knight. None of these people are truly what I would ever call "heros."
But I would call them brave!

Mayor Gavin Newsom... the mayor of San Francisco that thumbed his nose at the rest of the world in his fight to uphold the belief that All Men are Created Equal. I think he is heterosexual, but definitely a hero to the gay community.
Brad Pitt, and all the other heterosexuals who refuse to get married until we can ALL get married.
The state of Massachusetts for showing us all that the world will not end if gays are allowed to get married.
And finally, all of our gay brethren who continue to fight the good fight, and prosper in a world where we are not always welcomed.
Thanks for the great question......

Carson Kressley.
Without him guys would not be noticing how shitty they look. He singlehandledly changed the course of American men's fashion in one television season.
Before, business casual gave guys the excuse to wear wrinkly pleated khakis from Penney's, with the hems fraying, and crappy short sleeve shirts and t 's, to work and they thought they looked fine.
Now they are wearing ties, dress shirts and great dress trousers again, with the occasional jacket or suit, with hot stylish shoes. And over the shoulder computer bags are now OK !!
