You should suck it up and shoot for spending $2000 or more if you're gonna get into serious gaming and/or entertainment. Go to http://techdepot.com and see what they've got to offer in your budget, or pick one that you can customize and add what you want (which is actually what I'm doing right now too). Check out the HP Pavilion s7600e and go from there.

What ever you do stay away from compact and Hp. Dell is not doing so good with their customer service, If you are getting a lap top get a Toshiba, I swear by them and I always recommend them. Sony is ok but usually expensive. Gatway is ok i suppose. you want a 2.8ghz processor or better with pentium. AMD processor is better though. They dont seem to bog down as bad. Dont really know much about the most recent processor that came out the intel duo core 2. You need RAM its important at lis 1 gig. Of course you'll want a DVD rom and Burner. if you want it for internet make sure it has ethernet and a 56k modem. Gaming you want 3.0 processor or better. All in All you can go to www.tigerdirect.com and look up some things. They have some computers for sale for cheep on there. Also if you know anything about installing computer parts you can build one for real cheep. if you have any other questions please let me know..

Tiger Direct (www.tiger-direct.com) always has a bunch of great deals, and I have dealt with them in the past and loved their products. Here is a computer deal they have right now :

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2550119&Tab=0&NoMapp=0

All you need is a monitor and a pci-express card, try this one here :

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2512321&Sku=P450-7892

Also remember to buy a copy of an operating system if you do not already have one. I believe tiger direct sells windows xp home for $99 and professional for $130.00

This brings the total to under $1000.00 and gives you a computer that will play pretty much all the modern games, and high end desktop for publishing, video, etc.

If you do not like this setup, tiger-direct has many more, at cheaper and more expensive prices.

Be sure that if you purchase a barebone, that u have all the parts needed for the computer, as the one above barebone is missing a video card - I gave you another link to one to buy.

If you build your own computer, the parts needed are :
Power supply, case compliant with motherboard (atx, mini atx, etc)
Ram (memory)
Motherboard
Graphics Card
Hard Drive
Network Card (optional)
56k Modem (optional)
Cd/Dvd drive
Operating System
Monitor
