I'm seriously thinking about claiming on my household insurance for this, which I've never done in 20 years. Should I? Does anyone know if it will drastically affect the premiums in the future? I've tried Vanish, 1001, washing powder - nothing will shift it...

Hi,
No it wont effect the premuims at all, We had oil central heating(old house) and it leaked all over our brand new carpet we had layed about a month before and i rang the insurance company and they were round within 2 days! New carpet paid for inc fitting! Got a better carpet than before!
and my premuims are still exactly the same, thats what house insurance is there for!!
Good luck

Wine columnist Jennifer Rosen tests out home and commercial cleaning techniques for getting red wine stains out of a white carpet. The winner? A freshly mixed solution of two parts Hydrogen Peroxide to one part Blue Dawn dishwashing detergent. The runners up are milk for fabric and shaving cream for carpet. I have a housekeeping business and haven't tried the above, but I have heard that my clients have had good luck with a woolite carpet product on various stains, personally I use Resolve carpet cleaner for spot cleaning as well as in my carpet cleaner.

I will be honest unless you try immediatly with white wine or bicarbinated soda it will stain and nothing will get it out. My girls when young spilt ribena and cherryaide nothing ever really got the stain out of the cream carpet so I claimed off insurance and they paid up. It never effected my premiums that much as I had never claimed before.
A friend once was decorating and accidently knocked over a tub of paint she claimed off insurance and they paid she was able to carpet whole house with it. It wil depend on the policy you have so check it is it new for old?

Never use washing powder on carpets! Find a Industrial Hygiene company and try Prochem Coffee Stain Remover, it removes lots of food based stains (wine is a food) The acid in the wine can "set" the stain and it will not have helped to have used so many types of cleaner on your carpet. use plenty of paper towelling to draw out the liquid afterwards or better still, a wet and dry vac.

You need a bowl of hot water. Pour some bio washing up powder on the top and let it sink in to the water. Get a clean white cloth and damp the stain but do not make it wet. Get a glass of white wine and pour over the red stain. Repeat the water and wash powder process until the stain is removed. Do not rub but gently pat the stain until it comes out. This can take up to an hour but worth it.

New Red Wine stain:cover the stain with a good amount of bi carb soda and let dry for a few seconds. Then vaccum and re apply a smaller amount of bicarb, add a little vinegar and scrub with a nylon brush. leave it to dry and then vaccum. Old Red Wine Stain:Damp the stain with a cloth dipped in vinegar. If the stain doesnt come out, lightly damp it with methylated spirits on a cloth.

In my experience salt always works the best but you have to put it on the stain before it dries up. You might try to damp the stain with water and pour a generous amount of table salt over it. Let it dry completely and then vacum it up.
Don't know how your insurance premiums would change, don't think my insurance would cover red wine stains.

If as I suspect it has dried in a long time ago then your best bet would be to mix up a 50-50 solution of soda crystals and water and soak the stain in this for about a day then gently sponge and it shoul come out. If it doesnt come out completely the first time then repeat over the next few days.

Pour white wine over it and leave for a while then dab off. Do not rub it as it could spread. Ideally this should be done at the time of spillage. If this fails try vinegar which is a universal cleaner. If this fails I am sure Cilit Bang have an answer in their products.
