My dress is a halter gown, black dress, and it has a silver rhinestone brooch-thing in the mid-chest area.
I don't know what color to use for my eyeshadow. I tried wearing a greyish/silver eyeshadow with it but it just didn't look right to me. Please give me suggestions as to what to do. Thank you all!

Oh yeah, and my skin tone is pretty much the same as my avatar's (I know that plays a role in deciding makeup too).

Oh yeah, sorry about that. I forgot to mention that I have brown eyes (about a medium brown). Thanks for mentioning that "aculina" :o)

Don't match your shadow to your dress. If you get too "matchy" you'll look like a showgirl. Wearing a black dress allows your beauty to shine!
Apply your makeup in a way that flatters your skin tone and your features and you can't go wrong. Just apply it a bit darker and more dramatic than you would for a day event. You'll look beautiful and the focus will be on you and not your makeup!

you dont mention what colour shoes you are wearing, i shall assume black. i would go with a silver colour, if you find that as an eyeshadow silver does not suit you then you could try an eyecream which has a completley different texture to an eyeshadow. Or you just wear a bit of light black eyeshadow. However eyeshadow is not that important to look beautiful, sometimes it even draws attention away from the length of your lashes which is a waste of a good mascara. So if you still cant find the right colour eyeshadow then just slap on some nice mascara and maybe a coloured eyeliner if you want to add some colour and have a lovely time. Good Luck

You could definetly go with a dusty rose, in fact, often times your blush can play a second role as an eyeshadow. Or a light pink perhaps. It would have seemed that silver would work, but you said you tried that. Also, there is a darker grey or black that you could use. There is also a pearly white that might look good. I would really suggest you go to the store and try on some different shades to see what works for you. If you go to a nice department store - they often have make-up consultants that could help you find the right colors. Good luck.

You are correct, you can use dark purples. I recently went to an evening function in a black dress and I used an eggplant color for the outside lash and a lighter purple for the brow with a shimmery purple for the inner to mid lash. You can probably also use grays and charcoals, but if the purple eyeshadow is applied correctly, it will make your eyes pop. You can usually find the colors that you need on the same pallet. Good luck and hope you have a great time.

i know that this is going to sound bizarre or something but i had a black dress for the prom and did multicolors on my eyes. i would do a smoky-light smokey eyes, maybe try browns instead of black so it will not be too heavy . i would go to the Chanel counter and look at their quads which are like $50 for 4 shadows-can wear them wet or dry by the way! so i would get one that has a nude color, a white/silver/grey color, a black or chocolate brown and a light pink-pastel. use the nude color all over your lid and then start putting the colors on. start with the smokey shade and make sure that it is not too dark by the way! and after you do your smokey shade add a layer of color of silver or white or greyish shadow to make the color more friendly. after that i would use the pink as a wet shadow on the corner or your eyes to give you the new fall look that just was on the runway as well as the spring look too! use a simple foundation-remember to do your eyes first since if you mess up and you already did the rest of your make up on your face you have to start all over. then do the foundation and blush and light gloss. rule of thumb: smokey eyes pair up with light lips, and you never pair dark eyes and dark lips since that is considered too much as well as trashy! as for the liner try a copper liner!

really any color wold work with a black dress as long as it matches your skin tone. most classic would be a silver or bronze, you could get a little more color with maybe matching it with shoes purse and accesories but be careful not to over do it. if you dont like the look of those bright colors then just try going with a dark smokey shade with lots of eye liner and mascara or nothing at all, there are plenty of ways to mix it up!

Rosy to mauve pink.
Use a cream shadow instead of powder, it will stay on longer and has a slight shimmer to it. Cream shadow will look more gentle against the black while still providing beautiful color.
I highly recommend the brand below (available at any drugstore) - they come in a four color palette that you can decide what looks best on you.

Okay deep bronze eyeshadow for the lid, dark brown for the crease plus to make your eyes pop black pencil eyeliner and mascara. but it all depends on whether or not you want to play up the eyes if you do wear a light blush and clear lip gloss!

You want to wear a shadow that compliments your skin tone before your dress. A pink/mauve combination may be nice, with a more smokey eye, but stay away from a pearl finish that makes you look older than your true age. Just keep in mind less is more when it comes to makeup.
