It means that you can have a higher rate of pay, and options to pursue higher learning (ie. Grad school). There are plenty of jobs that you do not need a degree for and get paid quite well, but for some of us a college degree is necessary to have careers in certain fields.

A college degree doesn't always mean a lot in itself. But, it is a good experience, it broadens your horizons, and it opens the door to certain opportunities.
It doesn't mean that you are going to be successful or make a lot of money necessarily.
In some ways its like getting to level seven in Yahoo! Answers. Once you've got it you have something that most people on earth do not have. Education is a good thing.

A college degree allows you more opportunities for better employment than just having a high school diploma. The farther you go with education, the better your chances are. But you need a degree that offers something, not your liberal arts B.A. Something with a profession attached. Like a Med Tech, a nurse, respiratory therapist, etc.

its not as big of a deal as it was before, but it's still important because a college education is by choice, unlike elementary and high school. so if you choose to do it, and succeed by getting a degree, it is considered a big deal.

in actuality, only about 30 percent of the population has a degree... so while quite a few people have them, you're still better of than 70 percent of the population
