I have always wondered this. Lollypop women/men do great jobs making sure the kids get across safely, but what on earth is the point in a lollypop person waiting at a crossing for the light to turn red THEN they will cross the kids, even though the traffic has stopped?

Hmm when i was young all the lolypop people were at small roads, crossing kids on their own initiative, but now there they stand at a (pelican) crossing and press the button

I wondered this too. You can only assume it is yet another way of the local councils throwing our money away .Surely if the pelican crossing is doing its job(which we assume it is ) then there is no need for a lollipop lady there too. They should either be moved to streets where there are schools and no Pelicans, or they shouldn't be employed at all.

Children will often take a chance and run across the road just as the light is changing. If they understand that they are to cross only when the lollypop person allows it, then they won't encounter danger in this way. I remember one nightmare situation when I was crossing a road with my children in the company of a number of other people at a set of traffic lights showing a green man when a car came towards us hooting. It was driven by an old man who clearly had passed the point where he should have been allowed on the roads and who was completely oblivious to the traffic lights. Mercifully there were so many of us on the crossing that he had to stop, albeit reluctantly, but suppose it had just been one child?....

When we were young there were less cars on the road & people drived slower - now some mad people jump the lights allot more & so they are there just to add a bit of safety
