I have been in good schools (JC1 now) but i haven't been the greatest student for the past few years. Ive only been scraping by but recently, ive been extremely inspired to start getting serious and ive been trying very hard to catch up. its been going well. But the fact remains that i failed three out of four subjects at one point, eventhough i have pulled all my grades up to decent ones within a few months.I really think by next year i can aim for straight A's, and i just want to know if my past is going to affect the chances i have of getting into an ivy league instituition. i've always had a leadership position in school and i have been pursuring interests and bringing out my talents outside of school as well. :( I'm really ready to go all out but is it too late?

It's not too late, I think you could still have a good chance. However, Ivy League schools are not always the way to go. They are hugely expensive, and many are known to be 'party schools'. You might want to look into some of the more middle range schools. Go visit a couple campuses if you are able, check out some websites, talk to some people. An Ivy League education is not the end-all to life, and you may find that another school entirely is just what you need.

You have a big problem.

The Ivy League schools (Dartmouth, Brown, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, Penn and Harvard) receive about 20,000 applicants each, and they only have about 1300 - 1600 freshmen. So, of the millions of high school grads in the USA, fewer than 15,000 will be Ivy League Freshmen next year. They will be the best students in the USA - straight A, 4.0 unweighted averages, 800 college boards, lots of extracurriculars, etc.

There are 2,000 colleges in the USA. They are going to take the rest of the kids. A lot of these colleges are excellent -check the US News list and look at the top 100 or 200 schools. You may not have a realistic shot at the Ivys but there are lots of other well known schools that you might get into provided you can show that you have really changed your ways. I did interviews for two top colleges for many years, and the recruiters told me over and over that the one class of student that they dont want is smart kids who wont work!

ps the lady who thinks that Ivies are party schools is only half right - they are party schools because even when you have brilliant students who can do piles of really hard assignments very quickly - those students still like to drink, dance and screw around when they are finished working!

Yes, if you have a lot of money.
