OK - I am not a nut case nor do I dabble in UFO-mania. However, I sometimes see an object in the sky which I would describe as looking similar to a police car's flashing lights - only from, say, a mile or two away. Or it looks a bit like an airplane nearing an airport for landing - only it just floats there. There are 3 or 4 colors: Mostly green, then red and white, occasionally blue. They randomly flash in no partiular order, but fast. It sometimes appears to hover back and forth or even bob slightly up and down. I live just North of San Francisco, in Marin County. This thing is not always there but when it is it's almost always low in the Eastern sky. I won't go into the STUPID stuff some of my friends surmise about this thing. Suffice it to say that I question the police's need to spy on my friends (all of whom work part-time fast food jobs, live at home with their folks and still hangout with our highschool pals). Does anyone (who is educated/rational) know what I am seeing? Thanks

I saw something similar once - it was almost as bright as a plane's headlight, but changed colors every few seconds or so (not fast like a twinkling star on the horizon). It was definitely man-made, and it looked like it was in the sky, not on a distant mountain (this was in Massachusetts, we don't really have mountains). And it just hovered there for the hour or so that we were out there (my entire astronomy class saw it). We never did figure out what it was - too bad no one here has any definitive answers, either. My best guess was a weather balloon.

Nothern star? Stars twinkle because of atmospheric refractions/disturbance. Some weird conditions can generate odd mirage in sky that can project image of objects far away. There have been cases where people in one city report seeing sky line of other cities far off horizon.

My first guess would be some kind of building on a mountain or hillside. A watertower or an observatory, maybe?
