The nine schools in the University of Texas system are:

Texas- Austin (commonly known in the sports world as Texas)
Texas- Arlington
Texas- Brownsville
Texas- Dallas
Texas- El Paso (also known as UTEP)
Texas- Pan American
Texas- Permian Basin
Texas- San Antonio
Texas- Tyler

I do know that Austin, Arlington, El Paso, Pan American, and San Antonio compete in NCAA Division I, though not in all sports.

The Texas system is similar to the California system, as well as those in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where the schools are separate entities under one system.

Univ. of Texas system is composed of 9 different campuses. The largest is UT in Austin-although more commonly known just as Univ of Texas. UT-Arlington is another one of the campuses.

Basically, yes, they are 2 very separate schools. UT-Austin's campus of course is in Austin, while UT-Arlington is located several hours north, in between Dallas and Ft. Worth. UT-Arlington even has its own sports programs and its own football team.
