I like this say a lot and I think it reflects a smart pragmatic attitude, I was told it’s a British say, Is this correct?

Sounds like one of ours (Brit). Example, when we went into Nepal and come up against the Gurkha's, they fought so well they were recruited into the British Army and have been marvellous fighters for us ever since
