My fiance and I rented a house from his parents and moved out about 2 weeks ago. They stopped sending mail to the old address as the mail-lady knew we moved away. My fiance never gave them the change of address form, so a lot of his mail is being sent back. Well his mother called him and said the mail lady asked, "Why hasn't your son filled out the change of address form yet? Is he just trying to avoid the tons of medical bills he gets everyday?" My fiance is dealing with a horrible back injury that needs surgery and may also have cancer. He hadn't told his parents about any of this yet, because they are under a ton of stress and his mother is ill as well. The last thing he wanted was to worry her about this. Now she knows, because of this darn mail-lady talking about his mail! His parents didn't have access to our mail when we rented from them as they lived up the street and we had our own box. Isn't this a federal offense, is it legal to talk about someone's personal mail?

I don't believe it's illegal to talk about one's mail - if she had opened his mail and was reading it to his mother, that would be a different story. However, in saying that, it was EXTREMELY UNETHICAL what she did, and should have only reminded his mother that he needed to fill out the change of address form. Please visit www.usps.com and from there, the website can point you in the right direction into filing a complaint against her. Someone needs to know about this, as while it may not be illegal, it is unethical. Best of luck to both of you.

It is illegal to open the mail not addressed to you but to talk about it I don't think she can be prosecuted. But it is none of her business so you could sue her in a civil suit. I would check with a lawyer. But she is not spreading lies and the only thing you could sue for if she talks about you is slander. Like I said I would talk to a lawyer or call the postal service and inform them about it. They will take care of her. She may lose her job.

It's illegal to open somebody else's mail. Just because the mail lady made an off handed comment about his mail doesn't constitute a crime.

To my knowledge there is nothing that stops them from discussing this, but I am not sure about the laws that pertain to them. I know when it comes to the details about what is inside, that would be invasion of privacy, but what is on the exterior I don't think there are any laws prohibiting discussing what is sent to someone in general.
