I suspect you mean hieroglyphs, although these represent sounds (like an alphabet) and do not, in themselves, normally represent an entire word.

Entire words, specifically the names of pharaohs, were contained in something called a "cartouche".

Could you be thinking of the cross with a circle on top? This is an "Ankh" pronounced "ANK" It does not stand for a word. But, describes the object. Otherwise, the Egyptian alphabet (as such) was indeed Hieroglyphics!
