The geographer's word for them is "flood plains". Places where rivers naturally flood during peak flows.

The whole Gangetic delta in Bangladesh seems to be vulnerable.

Floods have occurred in other places too such as Orissa and Mumbai.

In the U.S. you can get flood maps from various companys, Like Beacon maps and from the Govt. India has similar flood maps as a left over from the British colonization but I am unsure how to access them. You should be able to pull something off the net from the Indian Govt. Or Contact Beacon maps In California and ask them about India. They have always been real helpful and the owner is the curious type who would go and find out for you just for the knowledge. I haven't contacted Beacon in about a year but they should still be in business
