Most states require that you not be over 18 at the start of the school year to attend public high school.
However, you can get a GED or go to adult night school. Many community colleges allow anyone 18 or over to attend.

I don't think that a 40 year old could go to a regular public high school. I do think they can take a program to get their GED elsewhere, like a tech school or something.

There is no age limit. Plenty of adults (even 90 year olds) go to high school.

As a student? I believe you can't be over 19. But you can go to night school at any age.

Night school, yes. Day school, not a good idea at all. If it was OK you'd have a whole bunch of old geezers doing it for reasons of sex.

I don't know what state you live in, but the colleges where I live integrate the GED with the college courses. They have special programs so you can do both at the same time.
