of course honesty can be a bad thing.
the truth hurts sometimes. pretty often actually.
and some people do not need to know a hurtful truth. in those cases it is better to tell a lie...
or an alternative truth... after all... despite what most honest people try to tell you, truth IS relative. EVERYTHING is true, for a given value of truth... that is how religions work. and stories. and true truth is impossible to achieve without knowing ALL facts bearing on the matter... which i seriously doubt is at all possible.
anyway... the point is this.
being ALWAYS honest can hurt people needlessly... which is BAD. some would say EVIL.

Yes, there are different level of lies and the consequences that arise from such lies. Obviously if you lie and tell your wife that she looks great in those ugly floral pants, the consequences are minimal. However, if a President lies and tells an entire country that we should go to war on false pretenses, the consequences are a lot greater. Society could not be completely honest and trust me, you wouldn't like it if everyone was. Part of dishonest is tact.... and you wouldn't want everyone walking around being honest without any tact.

I think you can surely be honest but tactful at the same time. Also, honesty wouldn't rule out refusing to answer.

Being honest is a good thing. But being toooooo honest is doesn't mean good. Sometimesuse your wits to trick people for good.

Sometimes it's better to to be more reserved or gaurded in your answers in order to spare the feelings of well meaning idiots.
