Living relatives and dead ones -- it doesn't matter. It seems there is a constant denial and coverup going on in families. What's your opinion?

If a family attempts to ignore a relatives orientation chances are they probably don't accept it at the moment. When my brother came out most of my family chose to ignore his choice while the rest of us sat aside and watched everyone pretend like nothing happend or changed. Three years later he has a great boyfriend that my parents/family loves and everything is the way it always should've been because he's is happy and we're happy. We all try to keep a relatives orientation a secret at first bcause it is hard to talk about. Once it is out in the open it starts to get easier to communicate and things start to get easier. The most important thing to remember is to love them like you always did. Family is irreplaceable and deserves to be treated so.

From what I've observed that's an American norm. People here like to hide anything that might hurt their family's reputation, including a relatives orientation. People in America have covered up all sorts of things about their relatives, from GLBT status to alcoholism to pedophilia. It's been that way here for decades at least, especially in "white suburbia."

well the only time that I've seen it happen is when the person--living or dead---wanted it to be kept secret.
