if you want something really affordable and durable, go for a mazda miata. If your really concerned about handling, a lotus elise or exige handles really well and they get good mileage, but the ride is kinda rough. If you want more comfort, maybe the bmw m6 (or m3 or m5). I don't know much about supercars, but maybe a ford gt? i've heard that they perform on par with the italian cars, and cost several grand less.
