Yes, technically all religions are cults. Thats how they got started, then they became a 'religion'.

Befor it was known as Christianity, it was called "The Way" (read Acts 9:2). So early Christians were said to "belong to The Way."
Since "cult" has a negative connotation, and is generally applied to any group by its opponents, then Christianity may be a cult for some and not for others. The same applies to any other religion that is not mainstream.
The word cult is derived from the Latin "cultus," meaning "care" or "adoration."
A cult is a cohesive group of people (often a relatively small and recently founded religious movement) devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture or society considers to be far outside the mainstream (2000 yrs ago Christianity was in this position against the pagan and Jewish religions).
Jesus said, "I am The Way and the truth, and the life - Joh 14:6.

Not necessarily. But cults can be formed around anything. Haven't you noticed? Freaks like Hitler, Stalin etc, were cult leaders. They claimed to be "religious" but they perverted everything because they were perverts. Don't get bound by the dogma in a thing, and you will see its creative life force within. Take everything absolutely and completely literally, and you miss the boat. That's what Intuitive Senses are for--to guide you to the next level of creative thought. I don't mean irresponsible thought, I mean Higher Thought, which includes guided thought. If it's too repressive, find a way out of it. Meaning, break open the barriers of mind that would hold you bound. Expand and keep expanding, and you will find there are no barriers or blocks to knowing Divine Love. God would not have you in a cult. The purpose of cultism is steal your will, your mind and your heart. You don't need another to tell you how to think. The fact you've asked the question shows you have a fine mind. Keep growing, asking, asking, and asking, and never stop. Tolerate much. Forgive a lot. That's how you arrive at joy and fullfillment.

First, I consider myself a Christian. But the more I know about science and history...I am beginning to realize maybe we are a cult. But the rewards of a Christian lifestyle are real. Comfort, fellowship, happiness, hope and faith are all things we learned from being a Christian. So it can't be that bad, right?
But I find myself not agreeing with everything that is said from the pulpit. I am working on trying not to be upset by this. Things change, the world changes and we have to make our own opinions. A lot of things we thought we knew when we were younger have revealed themselves to be untrue. That's just the way it goes....

To those who choose not to believe in Father God and His Word which became flesh, Jesus Christ and His Love, the Holy Spirit then yes it is a cult because these beliefs are "set in stone", beginning with the 10 Commandments. For those of us who accept them as the only true way, No we are not a cult. We are convinced.

In my view, yes. With sub-cults. Because it demands belief in propositions which cannot be tested, and obedience to rules and principles which cannot be challenged without allegation of heresy - and in many cases expulsion from the flock. To my mind, anything which will not stand up to critical rational review is a cult because it is mindless. And I'd include a lot of economic "recieved wisdom" in that. For instance, where's the "profit" if it entails destruction of non-renewable resources, and the real-world ecology on which both our (and other) continued existence, and the richness of our potential experience, depends (e.g. climate change). Many fixed political world-views could also be described as cults - plenty of followers, but an alarmed resistance to dissent.

Any group that routinely practices a ritual or worships unseen powers is arguably a cult. But I think it can be defined less by what a person believes than what a person chooses not to believe. Regardless of your faith, I think you need to examine whether you are one who is willing to change your beliefs based on fact, or change the facts based on your beliefs. If it is the latter, then you should at least ponder the possibility that your are susceptible to the belief system of a cult. Of course, if that is a suit that fits you, wear it well. Just don't judge those who may not fit your idea of current spiritual fashion.

All religion is cultish.
It is like the story of the 7 blind men and the elephant. Each was right about the part he held, but wrong about the whole.
All religion is right and wrong, at the same time.
You have heard a young child try to explain his world and smiled. So too is religion.
It is simple:
1. God love you. You should love God.
2. Love mankind, as we need all the help we can get.
3. Be good as being good is good for you.
4. When you die, believe you will go to heaven and you will.
See you there.
George.
