Zero. Not negative infinity because infinity is not a number.

Of course some assh o l e professor will tell you there is no known smallest number and reason as follows: If you give me any number you think is the smallest number, I can always find one number that is at least 1 less.

Or you can follow the Weierstrass methodology (another major fool and assho l e):
Given a small negative number d, there exists a negative number e such that |e| - |d| > 0.
The correct answer is that there is no known smallest positive number.

if you are considering absolute value, the smallest number is zero
if not, the number with the least value is negative infinity.

The question is meaningless since the real number axis is continuous & extended upto +infinity & - Infinity.
Your question would have been meaningfull if the real number axis had been discrete.
