For the most part, I believe it is lack of knowledge and fear. I am Catholic, and over my time have corrected many false beliefs by friends and people I have met about the Catholic Church.
Also, with the whole Priest/abuse stuff being a hot media topic recently, it provides a lot of ammo.
It's not that the Catholic church has more Priests that are child abusers than any other religion, just that with our priests being celibate, it gets a lot more attention.
People are afraid of what they don't understand, and therefore make fun of it to make themselves feel better.
Children or young adults in schools repeat things they have heard parents or other adults say.

I was raised Catholic and always called myself a recovering Catholic. My opinion is that over many many years the Church has gotten away from spirituality and become a business. The man made rules that are greed and fear based to scare people into believing certain things of whoever is in charge at the time. "Follow our ways or you go to hell." All religions break down to 2 simple things. Love God and love your neighbor as you would want to be treated.

I am not a Catholic but a member of another very persecuted religion. People make fun of us all because they don't understand. In my religion, we embrace all other religions because we know that there is one God. Call Him what you like but He is one. Also because we don't follow the "mainstream" practices. I feel that as long as you found a path to God that works for you, hold your head up high and stop worrying about it. Those who judge you are ignorant and will pay for their ignorance later. Hare Krishna!

Well Catholics enforced their religion on the native americans in the past. Many people believed that you should either be catholic, or be killed. Also, a lot of Catholic priests are caught as pedophiles. There are many other reasons I am not well aware of.

First of all, it's terrible that people make fun of you for being Catholic, and even more terrible if they claim to be Christians. I am not Cathloic, but I am a Christian who has learned about the Cathloic faith and found issues that I don't agree with. I think the reason people make fun of you is that first of all, they don't understand your faith, and second, they have seen many Cathloics at school who do not act like Christians. Thank you for bring this question up, I never thought about it from your perspective.

I'm LDS, I feel we're when you consider that we're so headquartered on missionary paintings so we're always in the market speakme to nonmembers seeking to baptize new contributors and deliver them into our Gospel. We also are a specified faith, we're distinctive from different christian religions when you consider that we suppose priesthood vigour is again on the planet, and that we're the one real church (different church buildings could also be real, however now not in a wholeness). We even have developed virtually 2 hundred temples global vast so we're going extra worldwide than U.S. We additionally suppose the church was once restored after a nice apostasty, which introduced forth the Book of Mormon, which humans persecute always, however it is one of these lovely real scripture written by way of prophets of old America. (And sure the bible comes FIRST in our set of scriptures). That's why :) Oh and probably cuz Satan fights the reality the toughest within the final days, to maintain reality from the ears of many, he is failing, however succeeding in some way, many humans have listenend to him. Those humans you are going to discover protesting President Hinckleys funeral, protesting regular convention, protesting temple rectangular in salt lake town. Those men

You could lose your current friends and make new catholic friends or if thats not possible, make non catholic new friends and don't bother telling them you are catholic. This will not solve all your problems of course. People are rude about all kinds of things apart from religion. As for your current friends, they are not friends obviously. Rude jokes are not friendly. Ignorant people are a waste of our precious time.

trust me, EVERY religion gets persecuted, and made fun of. Dont take it to the heart, just do what you believe in, as long as it makes you happy. I myself dont really follow organized religion, even though I do have christian beliefs like there is a God and he has a son Jesus that died for us and all that, but there are so many religions that say the same thing but practice their beliefs differently, so I dont follow any one because I dont think God likes people to fight over whos got the 'right' religion or who doesnt, as long as we try and be good people then its all good.

Its not just Catholics that are made fun of, think of the war in Iraq, all the sudden thousands of people in America discriminate against Muslims. Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists etc. etc. we are all out through tests of our faith, people making fun of you is all part of a peer pressure or a temptation to make you change your mind.Sometimes God allows you to be persuaded for good or bad.
