I believe angular modulation is the same as phase modulation.

I believe that qpr4ts is correct. The basic equation for a sinewave is
V(t) = Vp*sin(2*π*f*t+Θ) which allows any of the three variables (Vp, f, and Θ) to be varied (modulated) by an external signal. Varying Vp is 'amplitude modulation', Varying f is 'frequency modulation', and varying Θ is phase modulation.
