My first time going to college, at 18 years old, i screwed up and flunked out, well i laid out for several years and did some growing up, when i came back to school i have done good, i have a 3.0 gpa. well because i had some overcome some F's from my youth, my GPA will never be 3.5-4.0. So what are some tips that would help me get into med school in the U.S. I would like to hear from some people that have or know of someone who had been in the same type situation and got in med-school. Thanks.

File applications for the med schools you wish to consider and include a polite, respectful letter outlining why your GPA is so low.

Most medical schools will give more weight to recent grades than to the freshman year. Also, they will give more weight to your grades in the sciences than to those in other disciplines.

Have a chat with the members of the medical recommendations committee at your college and remind them that you have done well in recent years.

Before you even get accepted into a premed school you have to spend the first two years doing college general ed requirements (2 yrs) and some additional years included to take General Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Calculus (a subject that screws over even Honors students)

There are some community colleges and state universities out there with pretty decent med programs. Since they're not privately run they tend to be cheaper and set lower standards for applicant acceptance rates. They can be a good option to look into. If you ever get into one and start classes there but feel that the level of education is not up to par with what you're looking for you can just work hard and transfer out into a better institution.

You can retake courses that you previously received a failing grade (or a grade not to your satisfaction). Other than that, most colleges and universities will make you retake courses after a certain period of years (I seem to remember being told by one university that my general education requirements were good for eight years if I decided to pursue a different field for an undergraduate degree). I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

vollunteer for the red cross, take outside courses, do tons of volunteering and join groups. spend some time in the library... use a lot of big words (but not too big) in your application to med school.... and just show that you REALLY want it.
