This question relates to evolution/creationism and really belongs in either the religion section or the philosophy section. However...my opinion is, that is has to be the chicken either way. Even if it was the egg first, the question still implies that it is the egg of a CHICKEN. All a chicken egg is is an underdeveloped chicken. So, if you look at it from the big picture, regardless if it was the chicken or the egg, it's still gonna BE a chicken.
It's like asking "which came first, the tree or the acorn"? Well, it's a matter of whether you believe in creationism or evolution. I think it's a combination of both. If you believe in "God" and the bible, then you also believe the Hebrews. Their version is what is commonly called "Genesis" and says "God" created "animals". However, the Hebrews didn't specify the intricacies OF these "animals". I just have a really hard time believing "God" went *poof* there's a lion, and *poof* there's a tree and so on and so forth. Also, to "God" a day could span millenia, and "he" may not see a day in the same time span as we do. Remember, calendars and time wasn't discovered until many thousands of years later. Also, if "God" created everything in it's full form, none of us would have ever been babies. We would have came out fully developed. Everything (living) on this planet has the ability to grow, so therefore evolution is not only possible but can be proven (to a certain degree). So what I think is "God" took whatever, maybe even little tiny sea bacteria and just let it develop over time, but I still think the process started with some kind of higher force or form that is beyond our knowledge.

It does sound puzzling at first, but how much does one have to think until one realizes that both chicken and egg must necessarily have come from something that is neither a chicken nor an egg? This answer was knowable centuries before biology came about, yet people assumed there was some unsolvable mystery behind the issue.
The modern chicken is generally believed to be a descendant of "Archaeopteryx", the oldest known bird. This 150 million year old resident of the Jurassic period laid eggs, and at some point of time, evolved into an animal that was one generation away from being a proper chicken.
"The egg came first.
DNA mutations occur in the early stages of life of organisms. As you know, when new cells divide, the DNA within the nucleus separates nucleotides and duplicates, then two new helix are formed. The amino acids responsible for mitosis are prone to make mistakes to the genetic architecture-- a beautiful system of flaws that cause evolution and diversity in species. It's like the reason why children will look like their parents, but not approximately, they are a combination of both parent's ancestor genetic history and the result of new combinations in the DNA helix.
So according to fossil research, before the chicken was the "proto-chicken" and this bird was almost chicken, but not quite. Well this proto-chicken laid an egg with a mutation, and the interior change of the DNA was enough that the exterior of the new bird could be thought of as a new species.

I read about this sometime in the past year, but can't remember the source - most likely the Slate e-zine, or slashdot.com.
A scientist or research team supposedly cited conclusive proof that the egg came first. The eggs were not laid by chickens, the chickens were some type of mutation, but that's all I recall.
Unless you believe in Creationism, that's really the only thing that makes sense. New species do not spring to life from nowhere fully formed and start laying eggs to reproduce, at least in my world view.

If you believe the story of creation then it must be the chicken.
If you believe in evolution then it must be the egg.
I believe we'll not know for sure in this lifetime either way.
Now for the important question:
Which came first: The chicken salad sandwich or the egg salad sandwich?

First; I believe the Bible..
Gen 1:1-following tells of the God head creating everything we
see and have. All the animals and fowl(chickens) were created full grown and God required that they produce after their kind. Thus
the chicken was first and then the egg.

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed after having sex. The chicken lights up a cigarette and, turning to the egg with a smile, says, "Well, I guess that answers THAT question!"

chicken, since no other animal (who has different intention aside from eating the egg) would incubate the egg. if the egg came first, it wouldn't survive because (as i have typed) no one would incubate the freaking egg.. Stop Killing Animals! ^___^

if you believe in God, then listen to the answer under me.
If you believe in evolution, then the chicken came from an egg, which means chickens are from a different animal that evolved- or changed over the years.
