In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department offered an unusually candid assessment of America's war in Iraq.

"We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq," he said.

So how are Americans supposed to take this? Should we be glad that we're admitting our mistakes? Appalled that we're admitting weakness in the face of the enemy? Angry that Bush's stupidity and arrogance cost so many lives?

How do YOU feel about this statement?

Someone asked for facts. The FACT is, I was quoting a member of the State department. See for yourself.

And, yes, I would LOVE a crack at running America. But it'll never happen: I don't know enough rich people.

I just heard this on the radio right now.

Fernandez also said america is willing to talk to any groups in Iraq except Al-Qaeda to try to solve the civil conflict.

Nothing wrong with admitting your faults, I think the american administration is finally realising that its Gung Ho methods are going nowhere fast.

That someone in the government only said what the world has known for the last two years.....and that "bush is arrogant and stupid" is the understatement of the century!

Al-Jazeera television is the fox TV of the Arab nation. to even use them as a source is a joke. who cares what a low level pee on has to say. he should be fired for interviewing on the terrorist station anyway.

I think Alberto is being a coward and feeding the Al-Queda (oops, Al-Jazeera) network what it wanted to hear, just so that he would be safe.

that's it, take it all out of context. he was meaning that America thought that people actually wanted the fighting and tortures to end, which they obviously don't. they seem to want a mullah run, 14th century style country
