Mr Atal Vajpayee must be curious to know the answer to this question, and so must be the soul of Mr. Pramod Mahajan.YES, INDIA IS SHINING. Unfortunately, even after such a nice slogan, the NDA govt had to loose. India is shining because it is now a stable economy, and is counted among the technologically superiour countries. Even in the agricultural front, India is producing more than most of the big countries of its size. India is producing enough to feed 18% of humanity. Is it not a achievement? Indian business houses are now counted second to none. Do I need to mention Tatas, DLF, Mittals, Jindals, Thapars, Birlas any more in addition to one generation wonders like Infosys, Wipros, etc? But the pessimists cite so many counter arguments to disprove the India Shining slogans. They cite the examples and conditions of poverty, corruption, population etc to prove their point. I would like to discuss each of them one by one and dispel the myth.
Poverty- India is a tropical country. It has one of the pleasent climates, food habits, vegetation, and natural resources. India is not poor naturally. It has bore the brunt of several invasions and colonisation for the past 1000 years. Hence it has encompassed in itself lots of diversity but it could not have a single continuing governance ( like in England which introduced democracy with the issuance of Magna Carta). The most important effect of this was the disbalance in the distribution of wealth. The despots and their allies had all the lot, and the peasentry was poor. Even the British continued with the Mugal system of governance, as far as land tenancy was concerned. More over, the market system of British system was designed to favour England. The exploitation continued for over 200 years. Do you expect just 50 years to wipe that out?? When India became Independent, there were huge and insurmountable problems. India was food deficit country, Its population was 300 million +, and there was no middle class, the main engine of growth of economy. Pt. Nehru was not wrong in deciding on the Soviet Style planning, because it was the best in those times. The intervention of the state was necessary to drive the economy. True, the strategy did not succeed completely. It did not fail also that miserably. But 1991 was a really bad year, when India was too strectched in terms of liquidity, and had to accept the World Bank sponsored reforms programme. My friend, Since then, Poverty has reduced. True India still has lots of poor people, but the number is srinking day by day. Today, we have more opportunities to live and work, than it was 2 decades ago. Try to see, India is really Shining.
Corruption- Corruption is not the disease. It is a symptom of disease. The disease is good governance. Government is just one arm of good governance, the others being, the civil society, which includes NGOs, welfare organisations and intellectual citizenary, private business corporates and the media. After the announcement of the new Industrial policy in 1991, there is a greater participation of the Civil society and media in the Indian envorinment. There is Judicial activism, PILs, and many other redressal mechanisms. You are now actually talking about corruption, that something, which was taken for granted, just a few decades ago. Try to see clearly, India is really shining.
Population- Sir, what can the governmant do? Do you want us to adopt China style one child policy? Do you think it is feasible in a democratic set up?The people have to be educated enough to decide upon it. More over the fertility rate of India is too good. This shows that bilogically, and emotionally Indians are more capable to raise families even though most of them are poor. This is an achievement and not thing you should be ashamed of. Even in the so called developed societies, family structure is on the decline. But the pessimists must see, that India is fast catching up. The growth rate has declined considerably, and soon the trend will be reversed( that is, by 2050) This is not a bad report card. Now can you not see, that India is really Shining? Shining with optimism, with bravado inspite of such huge problems? INDIA IS SHINING.

For whom? Yes for some it is and for the rest its getting gloomier day by day.
Yes So called growth in economy as some mentioned here, is resulting in accumulation and concentration of capital in a few hands. And for the rest, it is spelling unemployment, hike in the rise of essential commodities (Mobiles, computers etc. are not essential for them but flour, rice, oil etc. are)
As for growth in economy, whereas few giants are swelling, farmers suicides are on the rise.
poverty increasing, people dying, unemployment increasing, in such a situation India will shine for those who will see this as an opportunity to get cheap and unconditional labour, for as unemployment grows, wages automatically come down, people do work for paltry Rs. 1000-1500 PM
