what could the problem be with my nintendo 64 controller?

Even though I have the controller on my game system plugged into the console it says on the tv "no controller" I tried it in player 1 and player 2 and it won't work.

If I can remember right, the N64's controller is 3 pronged, make sure nothing is broken out of the male or female side of the plugs, try another controller if you have one. If you don't you can probably pick one up at a used game store for $5 or less. If it still doesn't work then there is obviously something wrong with the console itself.
