i used lulu. They are great. I've never had any problems with them.
They are free and very easy to use, and i found everyone in the forums and customer service extremely friendly and helpful. You keep all rights to your book, you choose the cover, the royalties, everything.
I think they are defiantly the best self-publisher.
to see the great job they did on my book, check this link: http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
I definitely think you should try them out. They do books in black and white or colour, hardback or paper back, and in a variety of sizes.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Deanna

LULU is a print on demand site. This means that only the books that actually get ordered get printed and Lulu takes a cut from the sale of that book. Traditional self publishing/vanity publishing is where you pay the printers a lot of money and then you are stuck with a garage full of books you are desperately tying to sell to recoup your loses and in theory (but good luck with it) make a profit. So yeah, as far as I know its legit but won't get your book on any bookshelves - unless they are offering some kind of deal where they can get you onto bookshelves now, however that's something you will pay for. There are also sites like amazon and smash words where you can put your stuff up as an e-book and again they will take a small slice of each sale.
