It started out where it the ball was carried and not passed, but the forward pass became acceptable in the late 40's. American football is similar to rugby as baseball is similar to cricket. Its not padded rugby--rugby players couldn't play in the NFL...couldn't handle how physical the game is. They were pads for a reason because the dynamics of the game allow for bigger, harder hitting than in rugby. The skill level is much higher in American football thus the specialty players who only play in one direction or the other. Rarely, you will find an athlete with enough ability to play both ways.
But, you wouldn't understand, you "fall asleep during the game".

You maybe went a little over the top on saying how non-racist you are! I'm in the same position as you on this one but I have to agree. Surely most people who fall into the African American group really are just Americans at heart? I would be interested to hear the opinions of people who are African American - do they feel that they are just like all other non-African-American-Americans or do they feel that keeping the title makes them different somehow? I don't really know what to expect, I'm just making some guesses. I think it's a really interesting question that you've raised.

The game begins with a kick delivered by a FOOT.
It probably seems like a stop-start sport because it does end only a few seconds after each play begins. That is due to the intense physical nature of the game. The players do their best to flatten the opponent with the ball before he can make it to the goal where points are scored. After each play new strategy for the next play is discussed and the opposing team must attempt to determine what that strategy is. If they guess wrong and send too many players the wrong way the team with the ball will run the distance and make six points.
It is a very grueling hard hitting game and only the most fit of athletes can tolerate the bruising involved in the game.

Any sport played in America is called what the hell they seem appropriate to call it. Take Baseball for instance, it's 'rounders' we all remember playing at school. It's a traditional English School game, that was until the yanks got hold of the idea, stuck a daft looking tin-hat on, more padding and called it 'Baseball' Same goes for American 'Football' they've taken the concept of Rugby, added a bit a razzmatazz, more padding and hey presto! another crap national sport is born.

I believe it is called football because the game begins (and a team taking over after the opposite team scores begins) with a foot kick and advance against the possessing team's initial drive.
This started in the best American schools right after the US civil war, and I don't think they knew anything about European sports or English naming conventions for rugby, football (=soccor) etc.
There is a COMPLETE team change when switching from offense to defense and vice versa -- the central factor for that is the spectacular rate of injuries and sprains, so that it is nearly certain someone who tries to play all the time will get hurt.
American Football is a contact sport designed to injure the unprepared or the tired or the out-of-practice.

football is a generic term for a lot of sports.
these include Association Football (soccer), lacrosse, rugby and the american game (Harvard college rules football i believe)
it is common for the most prevailent version in a certain area to be known as just football hence why the english call soccer football.
The rules of the American game allow unlimited roll on, roll off substitutions. Over the years, game stratergy has developed so it is common practice to have 3 seperate teams each seperate phase of the game (offence, D Fence and kick off teams.) This makes for a more exciting game as you get matchups of top notch offensive sides battling top notch d-fence sides and also reduces the likelyhood of injury in what is a very physical game (more so than rugby in many ways)

why can no one else in the whole world understand that Americans play football differently than everyone else because we like the way our game is played? why does everyone else have to complain about what we call it or how we play it it is completely different sports than Rugby and Soccer totally different rules and scoring systems if you dont like it dont watch it. i am not trying to be rude or anything i have given both of those other sports a chance and enjoy watching both of them if you will read the rules to American football and watch it after understanding the rules it is a very likeable game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football there is a link to the rules and regulation to the game read and enjoy it is so much fun to watch
