Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien once said, "A proof is a proof. What's a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof, and if it's a good proof, it's because it's proven."
He is no longer the Prime Minister. (Thank God.)

The proof is the sequence of steps or stages used in establishing the validity of a mathematical or philosophical proposition.
These steps are a logical derivation of the proposition from axioms, or explicit assumptions, and previously proved propositions.

in math its how you prove theorems and postulates and other stuff using given inforamtion. it will give you a a set of information like line l is parallel to line m, etc. and sometimes a drawing. then it will say prove angle1 is congruent to angle 2, etc. just solve it justifing each of your steps with a theorem or postulate.
