I have to admit that this question was spawned in my mind by the recent debates on illegal immigration and controversies with the overwhelming Hispanic culture here in the southwest US.
It seems that most older waves of immigrants went severely out of their way to quash the practice of their culture when they arrived here and rushed to assimilate as "Americans". Many refused to speak their language with their children and gave up celebrations and other distinct features and connections with their old country.
I'm half Irish and a few of my friends are of Italian, Egyptian and Greek heritage, yet our families could be interchangeable. Being so surrounded by the Mexican culture, we realize now we miss having a heritage and wish I could hear blaring Irish music, see Irish language billboards in my neighborhoods, whatever. Basically, I guess I'm really jealous of the Mexicans in this nation who have their cultural centers, tv stations, magazines, congressional delegation even.

Why are you jealous of Mexicans? What culture do they have, low riders and having dozens of kids?

Resent isn't really the right word I suppose! They did what they had to to survive in a new country that didn't exactly support their different cultures. Mexicans are coming in so numerously that in some places it seems that their taking over. I'm not jealous of the Mexican language, billboards, products ect. But it does concern me that there is such great effort to keep them happy when almost half of them are here illegally. If we went to Mexico do you think we're going to find products with English Product information and English Radio ect. I don't think so! Most people when moving to a new country generally plan of learning the language and culture of that country. They don't expect that country to cater to their language and culture. You can adapt to the new countrys culture and speak your own language and be keep family and old country traditions at the same time in your home. That way you have you family heritage in tact and adapt to your new country as well. But with this south American culture, it just seems to me if they didn't want to leave their country behind, then why did they come to the new country!

My grandfather was from eastern Europe and when he got settled in America, he banned all foreign language from the home, so my Dad never learned to speak another language. I've often thought this was unfortunate, as did my Dad. I have friends whose grandfathers were also from eastern Europe but did pass the language down. Some of these friends even went to Saturday school to learn to read and write. Now, my best friend knows 3 languages and is much valued at work when it comes to international business.

When people come here they should give up their old ways and assimulate. The country of their origin is a dead end culture, that's why they left.
This is the USA, if you don't want to join us, leave.

yes, I do. I have no ties whatsoever to any cultural group and I find the lack of traditions quite sad.
