i currently have 256 mb of RAM (DDR 184 pins) but i want to add another 512 mb (making a total of 768 ram) , is it possible to do? (sockets avalible for both 266mhz-pci2100 and 200mhz-pci1600)

each slot can hold DDR PC3200,DDR PC2700,DDR PC4000

CPU : AMD Athlon 1.67 mhz
Motherboard : ASUS a7n266-vm

You have 2 slots that can hold 512 each, for a max of 1GB. So yes you can add 512MB to give you a total of 768MB. Since your motherboard does not support dual channel, there is no need to have the same size stick in each slot. Your motherboard will only run sticks at PC2100 speed, but if you buy a higher speed stick it will work, just at the lower speed. yes, they do not have to equal amounts of ram for both sticks to work
