My kids want to wear socks in their school colors. The colors are blue and gold. Rather than mess with Rit dye I was wondering if food coloring would work?
Will it bleed a lot? Is there something that I can do to make it not bleed? Is this a good idea, or should I use something else?

You can use food-based dye, but your kids can't sweat, nor can you wash the socks (-:.

But, I've gotten a nice gold from onion skins. Get two or three cups of yellow onion skins (maybe your supermarket will let you have some). Wash the socks with some baking soda added to the water. Put the onion skins in a glass or stainless steel pot, and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then add the socks. Boil for about an hour (don't let the water run dry!), then let the whole thing sit overnight. Let the socks airdry in the morning (preferably in the sun), then wash again. The dye-job may be kind of crinkly, but it should be a nice gold. Try this out on old white socks first, if you are not sure.

You can add a little blue with some embroidery thread.

If you want something super-easy, though, how about fabric markers?

I believe you can use food dye. Although the effects may not be as bright as you hope for. To keep it from bleeding soak the socks in cold water in a basin and add 1 - 2 cups of white vinegar. This will make the socks colorfast and keep them from bleeding out in the wash. Forgot to mention to soak them overnight.
