I've actually had some SUCCESS on this matter. Here's how:
1. I opened a savings account in a bank in another state, sent them a deposit to get it started, and now have automatic deposits made there from my paychecks. I received no checks, no debit card, no ATM card, and have no access to the funds unless I contact the bank and ask for a check, which they mail within 48 hours. The balance grows monthly and earns interest.
2. I have a checking/savings account at a local bank with online access. Every few days, I go online to check the balance and then round the checking account down and deposit the difference in savings. For example, the checking account may have a balance of $138.54. I'll round it down to $130 by depositing the $8.54 into savings. Or if I'm going to be paid in a day or two and won't need more money until then, I may put $100 in savings and leave the $38.54 in checking. Live on less than you make and continually transfer the extra to savings.
3. If I get any "extra" money (birthday or Christmas gift money, tax returns, bonuses, yard sale funds, etc.) it goes into savings.
4. To help the shopping problem, find other activities besides going to stores. If you still end up in a store and want to purchase something, make yourself go home and have to come back the next day to get it. Usually, you won't. If your shopping is online, stay away from the computer or have a computer whiz block the sites where you buy, or just hand over your charge cards to a trusted family member so you can't use them without good cause.
GOOD LUCK!

I would also add to other answers that if you cook for yourself it is always cheeper...I did it when I was student. You can always try to choose the cheepest food (but still try to eat healthy!)..and if you cook it is usually healthies than when you buy rady or half ready food. I was even taking my coffee and tea to the school, and not buying it in the cafeteria. Rice and pasta are usualy cheep, and make it holeweet for helth and full stomack reason.plan your cooking in adwance, maybe for a whole week so you will buy only the things you need.
For saving time, I used to took once a week for 3-4 hours making the food for the whole week, and then the rest of the week I was just warming up my food. Normylly one cooks 1-2 hours a day, but when you cook and bake simultaniously, it takes all together 3-4 hours a week.
Also you can save on clothes a lot. I dress in Second hand shops. It is true that I have my own style, which is not nesecerely folowing the latest fashion, so it is easier for me, plus most of people tell that I have good style. I also alway thing how will the new peace of clothing fut the rest of my cloths in shape, color fabric. Alway choose clother of good quality.
Good shoes are not something you save on. Buy good quality things, because as English say, we are not rich enough to buy cheep things. When you buy something of good quality, it lasts longer. And I like when shoes last long!
Before buying anything, stop and ask yourself if you need that thing really. And ask yourself this question once again. and only then, if the answer is yes, put it in you shopping basket.
Then you can save on public transportation as well. If it is possible you can walk or ride bicycle, to your work, school. Then you will not need to go to jim as well, as you will exercise by just getting somewhere.
The rest can be your imagination too.
good luck.

Ya, get a savings account. I have one and I never have any money to spend because its all in the bank. But good presents dont have to be expensive. Try making something, like brownies or cookies or some cool craft thing. Oh and try shopping on black friday thats where the best deals are(:

realize that materialism is so pointless. we all die someday. as far as saving it, why not reward yourself or indulge in the simpler things in life? go hiking, volunteer to walk dogs, help the homeless ... those have far greater rewards than buying a stupid pair of pants thats $50, that's nothing more than threads sewn together.
because when you buy something, yeah it's nice for a few days, but then, your joy balances out and you crave something else. why not just save it when this is going to happen anyway?
as far as saving it, why not get a CD at a bank?
