Sadly, because people are apathetic, frightened little sheep who can be bullied, scared or decieved into believing anything as long as they can still afford gas. The average voter's ability to think ahead in a rational way does not exceed the date of their next paycheck. Also--and this is my own personal gripe being a man with a political science degree and a military commission--people really don't understand politics at all, but they think they do. If it came down to a conversation about math or literature, most people would not attempt to feign knowledge. But with politics, everyone is a freaking expert. They spout catchy phrases they heard from the talking heads on TV as if their words had any meaning whatsoever when they really just sound like idiots. From what I can tell, politics is the only subject that people do this with as a matter of habit. It's pathetic that these are the very people who are asked to perpetuate one of the greatest democracies in human history.

Sorry. I had to choose between cheerful and honest. I chose honest.

Great question , or comment,
The people, expect "OTHER PEOPLE" to change or fix things,..

I am guilty of this also, yet, i point the finger at others, i need to stay focused, and get involved, or not complain,
sad, the free country, the freedom, and yet we are all wrapped up in our own soap opera..

When there is a catastropy, a horrible happening, then people wake up..

WHY,, BECAUSE WE ACT AS THOUGH BAD THINGS ARE NOT HAPPENING,,

I AM WORKING ON ME,,THAT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH, BUT THAT IS THE TRUTH

Because we as the citizen of the USA has little power into getting a good president into office. One that won't attack a country with no good reason. But hopefully this will change next presidential elections.

Everybody but you, right? You're so on top of things and Hip to whats going on with your clear precise understanding of life and government through all the information you read on Liberal BLOGS and radio.

what do you think should happen? impeach Bush? burn abortion clinics? Free Willy? take troops out? stop closing factories in US? Keep american farms active? Lower drinking age? leagalize prostitution and marijuana? change the speed limit to 90 MPH?

The govt is not perfect - heck its mostly staffed with former lawyers who we all know are bottom feeders of this world - our consitution protects us from idiots who take office and want to institute bogus laws - -we vote for them. Thats our voice. unfortunately we all cant agree - they do the best they can.

The general public does not pay attention unless it effects them personally in a negative way. This is particularly true of the middle class.

they are not asleep. they are awake but sedated by their ignorance and compliance and whatever else...

EL Doctorow asked through character in his book Ragtime, 'how are the few elite able to manipulate the many'? Answer: 'by convincing the many that they want the same things; by getting the many to relate to the desires of the few.' of course, my wording is shoddy, but I hope it makes sense to someone.

Too many people are apathetic. Most of them care more about American Idol than their government.
