Let x be the number. Then 20% of x is 0.2x.

You have x - 0.2x = 20. Factor out an x, and get x(1-0.2) = 20, or 0.8x = 20. Therefore, x = 20/0.8 = 25.

So if it was decreased by 20% then 80% of the original is 20 so....

20/x = 80/100
cross multiply

2000= 80x
Factor out the X

2000/80

X=25

the equsion can be used for any % math problem when you have 2 of the variables to get the third. :)
