The phrase I know states "mad, bad or both" . Your saying could possibly be indicating the different usage of the word "mad" as in unbalanced or angry. Thus that would equate to the aforementioned mad, bad or both.

are you referring to "he was either a genius or a madman or both?" They say there is a fine line between being a genius and being insane. Take a look at some of the greatest artistic geniuses, Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, John Lennon, Picasso, Van Gogh...they were all a little crazy.

I can't help feeling there is a word missing here like ...'he was either crazy, or mad, or both'.... without a second word the sentence really doesn't make sense .... 'or mad' - as opposed to what? - therefore there can't be a 'both' without a second word.....
