The way I see it, is that people don't want to accept any blame or responsibility if their kid does something wrong. So they find a scapegoat. They can't be bothered to raise their children right, and teach them good from bad.
It's bad parenting.
And, the fact that so many 'holier-than-thou' people try to ban games doesn't help, as then so many people jump onto the bandwagon, without judging the game themselves.
The game 'Bully' is a good examply. I bought the game, and I love it. It's really fun to play, and has a great storyline.
Yet all these people hate it, and try to ban it.
Guess what?
None of them... have actually played the game.
Do you see the hypocrisy here?

Irresponsible parents too ignorant to read the label printed clearly on the box. Perhaps they are illiterate...
It would appear to me that the greater concern should not be the simulated violence in an adult video game but the reality of the violence shown daily on the evening news.
How is it that certain groups maintain that a video game contributes to violence yet the Sunday paper does not?
You are correct however, there is a rating system for video games which serve as an indication as to what is appropriate and what is not. It is not entirely difficult to understand and leaves the parent with little excuse as to why their children have the game if they had simply to read the label.

being the criminal enables you to empahize with him. the violence, hookers and thrill you get from it.
according to this article the uproar was part of the advertisment scheme:
The game, with its violent subject matter, generated a great deal of controversy. However, this was deemed to be intentional, and was the first game known to have been publicised in such a way. Take 2 Games, the publishers of Grand Theft Auto, hired publicist Max Clifford to generate an aura of controversy about the game in the local media. As a result, politicians stepped into the foray. Whatever the impact on game censorship and the perception of video gaming, the publicity worked - the title was hugely successful simply because those attempting to ban the game were inadvertently generating publicity for it. This has been a known and recognised phenomenon of violent video games ever since Doom and Mortal Kombat.

I was showing my Mother Grand Theft Auto 3 back when it came out and I climbed up on a roof top and snipered a guy in the crosswalk below.... My Mother had a fit... then I said, "You ain't seen nothin' yet" and then I lobbed Molotov cocktails into the crowd that had gathered and zoomed in on all the people running around on fire and screaming.... I was giggling my butt off and Mom was just standing there looking at me like I was Dr. Mengle or something..... ahhhh great family entertainment I tell you. BTW I'm 42 and my Mom is 67. She wants me to get therapy for my problem, but I just tell her, "Violent video games are the best medicine for what ails me" Heh, Cheaper too.
