Whatever she pleases. If she enjoys Nancy Drew, then that's great. If she likes Harry Potter, that's fine. If she wants to read The Martian Chronicles, that's good too. There are so many wonderful books available, both the classics and the new books, that there is a world of choice. Everyone doesn't like the same kind of books, and it's great to experiment, read different kinds of books, from biographies to adventures.

What do you want to read? Do you want to be a better reader? Have a better vocabulary? Find books that challenge you in terms of the language, in terms of the concepts, in terms of the style. These books can also be fun; the two ideas of challenge and fun don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Have you read the Harry Potter books? How about books like Jane Austen? Little Women? Do you like non-fiction? The Autobiography of Anne Frank is a great read.

Vary what you read. Explore your interests. Talk to your teachers and librarians, as well as your parents or guardians.

One suggestion would be King Fortis the Brave - it's about a pair of twelve-year-old twins (perfect for your age) who are brought into a magical world where they get caught up in a battle for the land. It's full of adventure and humor, and two of the characters (Aimee and Gillian) are girls your age that you would easily be able to identify with.

If you like books like Harry Potter of Chronicles of Narnia, you will really like this one!

Angus, Thongs and full frontal snogging

Trust me it sounds slightly dirty but it is halarous for a 12 year old. It is all about a girl her cat (angus) how she doesnt understand why girls wear thongs and kissing boys. Generally adorable. When i read it at 12-13 i definately got looks because i was cracking up in the middle of class

I'd suggest any and all of the MANY Wizard of Oz books, and also Alan Garner's books "The Weirdstone of Brisingamen" and "The Moon of Gomrath".

The latter two books tell the story of two fraternal twins (a boy and a girl) in the Welsh (?) countryside, and their adventures with a wizard named Cadellin, who is in charge of watching over the sleeping Knights of the Round Table. Great story, as I recall.

Both of the Garner books can be found at Amazon.com

Flipped, it's a VERY GOOD book for kids her age. By Wendelin Van Draanen. it's not about fantasy, it's fiction. Not a mystery, not a scary story. But it is based off what can happen in real life to real middle school kids learning about peer pressure, crushes, and what matters
Or Comfort by Carolee Dean about doing whats good for you and not letting anything or anyone squash your dreams, not even your parents

As much as possible. Do not neglet the classics, nor science fiction. Approach all books with an open mind and a grain of salt.

Avoid pulp and romantic fiction.
