As societies tend to become increasingly individualized, the oppertunity for anomie becomes much more possible. As people are confronted with a sense of confusion about their existence and an emptyness which is increasingly prevalant in modern society they seek ways to find meaning. Religious fundamentalism, whether or not one prefers it, offers an individual an oppertunity to find meaning through a strict set of moral values and religious code. Though one many have to supress or even reliquish individuality to participate, the benefit of community, when community is becoming increasingly fragmented, and answers to the key metaphysical questions in an increasingly uncertain era, make religious fundamentalism a desirable alternative for many.
