I am really having a tough time with it because I really would like to play some pretty songs.

I learned a lot from choir so I know what the sharps and flats are and all that stuff. I know the key names but I have trouble keeping them in my head so I always end up looking at a cheat sheet when I practice a song.

A teacher is always the best way to go, but then there are a lot of bad teachers out there. If you are looking for someone knowledgable, but cheap, go for a college student. Most universities have programs for college students to gain experience.

Otherwise, you can find some really great books that will help you learn. If you're an adult and already have a big of musical knowledge I would suggest Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures, Level One. It's a wonderful resource with detailed instructions and nice songs. You could even check in with a teacher every couple weeks or so to make sure you're on the right track.

As a piano teacher myself, I very much so look down on the crap out there that claims to teach you quickly with a video or CD-Rom. From your choir experience, I can tell that you're a serious student, who wants to learn the correct way. Take my advice.

The Faber and FAber Adult Series includes music, theory, technique and you can also get one with a CD, so you can listen to all of the pieces in the book.

there are computer programs that you can get that teach you how to play the piano. if you have an electronic keyboard you can actually connect the computer to the keyboard. there are also video tapes you can buy and a bunch of great books out there. I personally think you should sign up for lessons anyway because nothing can replace a real teacher. I took piano lessons for 10 years and quit when I went off to college so after that I just taught myself.

no.

piano is one of the most complicated instruments. if you're just into it for learning songs, you can find a cheap teacher who will teach you the basics (look into hiring a college student or high schooler). if you really, really want to learn and progress, then you should get an experienced teacher.
