Why is it that the world is round and not square or any other shape?

For the same area, a sphere has smallest volume in comparison to other 3-D shapes hence, lowest energy state.
This is the reason solids tend to acquire spherical shapes. To remain in lowest energy state all objects tend to acquire round or spherical shapes or cross sections. This is the reason our planet along with its co-genitors are round in shape.

Gravity pulls us and all matter in to the center of the earth. It pulls equally in all directions from the very center of the earth, forming a ball. If the earth was a big cube, the big points would get pulled in by gravity and it would become a ball again.
